Diet dilemma - the problem
It goes without saying that a balanced, complete diet is an essential component in ensuring that a Cavalier
lives a full and healthy life. Unfortunately, too many owners are misled by advertisements (or worse,
veterinarians) to think that a kibble can provide this. It can't. The major cause of death in pets in
America today is cancer - something that was virtually unheard of 30 or 40 years ago. What is the major
difference between then and now? Diet. Years ago dogs were fed mainly table scraps or fresh meat diets,
then the commercial pet food industry geared up and started to brainwash owners into thinking that their
mass-produced, unhealthy foods would meet all of a pet's nutritional needs.
Never mind the fact that these kibbles contain everything from meat from diseased animals to flea collars, and
even euthanized pets, rendered down - even the "natural" ingredients are unsuitable. Any food that contains
grain products, or meat by-products should be avoided. And that includes not only the most popular (and
worst) food in America "Ol' Roy" from Wal-Mart, but also "Hill's Science Diet", so beloved of vets. None of
those kibbles should be the main component of a healthy dog's diet.
Understanding this background, for many years we have searched for the best diet for our dogs. We have tried all
the best commercial kibbles and canned foods, and have not been happy with any of them. Apart from anything else,
the unwholesome ingredients in most of them, and the link to cancers, skin allergies and other ailments that are
now surfacing, made us increasingly unhappy with feeding commercially prepared foods to our companions.
Then about eight years ago, after reading Dr. Ian Billinghurst's books, we decided to try the raw food, or
BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food), diet. We quickly saw improvements in the health of our dogs. Veterinary
visits were fewer, their coats improved, and their teeth were in better condition.
We were converted! Now we are recommend a natural raw food diet to all of our puppy buyers and friends.
